70% of Altcoins Above the 200-Day, Index at 41: Two Signals, Two Different Truths

CryptoPomp
The data shows a contradiction that most market commentary is trying to paper over. On Binance, roughly 70% of listed altcoins now trade above their 200-day moving average. That statistic is being recycled across every timeline this week as the opening bell of an altcoin season. Sitting directly beside it is the number nobody quotes. The Altcoin Season Index reads 41. Not 75. Forty-one. For readers who have not internalized the methodology: the index measures the proportion of the top 50 altcoins that have outperformed Bitcoin across a rolling 90-day window. A print of 75 confirms a season. A print of 41 means fewer than half are beating BTC. We are holding two true statements at once โ€” "70% are above their long-term average" and "less than half are beating Bitcoin." They answer different questions. The market is treating them as one question, and that error is precisely how capital dies in a bear tape. Set the structure before the conclusions, because here the structure is the entire argument. Bitcoin has spent nearly a year trapped between roughly $75,600 and $82,000. A band that wide, held that long, is not indecision. It is a clearing range, where positions transfer from impatient hands to patient ones. BTC dominance sits at 59.34%, up half a percentage point across three sessions. Total3 โ€” the aggregate market capitalisation of everything that is not Bitcoin or Ethereum โ€” has climbed back to $800 billion, an eight-month high. ETH/BTC trades at 0.03238, nudging a descending trendline drawn from 2021 but still a fraction of its peak. Three of those four inputs describe Bitcoin absorbing capital, not distributing it. The fourth โ€” Total3 โ€” describes a subset of the market recovering in absolute terms. Nowhere does any input describe capital rotating down the risk curve. That distinction is what separates a real season from a repair bounce, and it is the distinction the headline number is designed to blur. Here is the core. The 200-day moving average is a lagging indicator. After a deep drawdown, the first meaningful bounce touches the 200-day with such regularity that the touch itself carries almost no information. It tells you where price has been, not where price is going. On Binance alone, over a sample biased toward listings with better liquidity and stronger communities, the reading flatters itself. A single exchange is not the market. It is a curated slice of the market, and curated slices systematically overstate breadth. The Altcoin Season Index strips out Bitcoin's beta. That is why 41 matters more than 70%. | Metric | Reading | What it measures | Signal quality | |--------|---------|------------------|----------------| | Altcoins above 200MA | ~70% (Binance sample) | Absolute price vs own history | Lagging, low information | | Altcoin Season Index | 41 | Relative strength vs BTC, 90-day | Leading, high information | | BTC Dominance | 59.34% (+0.5% / 3d) | Capital preference | Confirms BTC bid | | Total3 | $800B | Aggregate altcoin cap | Absolute, breadth-blind | | ETH/BTC | 0.03238 | Rotation gate | Unconfirmed | Read the divergence, not the levels. The index fell from 67 in August to 41 in September, a decline of roughly 39%, while the aggregate altcoin market cap climbed. Relative strength deteriorating as absolute market cap rises is the signature of a Bitcoin-led middle leg. Altcoins can rally in that regime. They simply cannot outrun the benchmark, and the ones holding the bag are those who mistook participation for outperformance. When I deployed $500,000 across Uniswap V2 and Compound during DeFi Summer in 2020, I did not trust theoretical efficiency. I measured the exact latency between an oracle price spike and the liquidation trigger, and I published the slippage numbers. What that work taught me is simple: execution speed is a variable, and variables get priced. Here, the variable is the 90-day window itself. It is slow by construction. It will not flip bullish until the rotation has already happened โ€” which means the index is not a lag on this move. It is a filter against it. Audit trails reveal what price action conceals. The metrics this article omits are more telling than the ones it prints. There is no spot volume, no perpetual funding rate, no stablecoin net inflow, no change in top-50 market-cap concentration. A genuine altcoin season arrives with balance-sheet evidence: stablecoins migrating on-chain, funding turning positive and staying there, and vol expanding with the advance. Without those, we have a price chart and a haircut. Now the part the timeline amplifies. A widely followed account this week invoked the "nine-month parabola" and suggested that if history repeats, we are in the early innings of another run. That is a survivorship frame. It cites the sequences that worked and quietly discards the sequences that did not. You cannot backtest a narrative against the cases it chose to remember. Risk is priced in before the panic begins โ€” and it is also priced in before the optimism ends. The asymmetry is asymmetric on both sides. The more credible read comes from the on-chain side. CryptoQuant's Darkfost flagged caution rather than celebration, and the numbers back the caution: fewer than half the top 50 beating BTC, dominance still rising, ETH/BTC testing but not confirming. Liquidity is a mirror, not a floor. It reflects where capital currently wants to be, and right now capital wants to be in Bitcoin. This is where retail and smart money diverge. Retail reads the 70% headline and treats it as permission. Smart money reads the 41 and treats it as restraint. The former is watching price; the latter is watching flow. In every late-cycle and mid-cycle bear I have traded, that gap โ€” between what price shows and what flow records โ€” is where the losses live. The ledger does not lie, it only records, and what it currently records is a market where the benchmark is winning and the cohort is celebrating. Two structural forces deepen the risk. The first is that a Binance-only sample overstates mild recoveries; the true, market-wide breadth is almost certainly weaker than 70%. The second is that a year-long range under BTC resolves violently. Bounces that reach the 200-day inside such a range have historically been distribution, not accumulation. Stress tests separate architects from tourists, and a month of green candles is not a stress test โ€” it is a vacation. Where does that leave an options strategist who prices probabilities rather than hopes? At a decision gate, not a signal. Three conditions would convert this from a repair bounce into a rotation: the Altcoin Season Index clearing 75 on a sustained basis, ETH/BTC holding above 0.0324 rather than merely grazing it, and BTC dominance rolling over from 59.34% toward the mid-50s. All three are measurable. None of them are here. If those three flip, I will pay to be long the cohort. If they do not, then the 70% headline was never a signal โ€” it was a sales pitch. Strikes are set in stone, not sentiment, and the strike that matters next is not a price on any single coin. It is the level on a relative-strength index that the celebration has been careful not to show you.
