If tokenized assets can truly become productive collateral, the potential market size could be in the trillions of dollars. If they remain as static tokens, we'll have built a beautiful, but useless, infrastructure.
The mWIN case shows a promising direction, but it's still in its early stages. The trust model is heavily dependent on centralized intermediaries (Northern Trust as custodian, Wellington as asset manager, and a potential oracle provider). This adds trust layers and has its own risks.
The liquidation mismatch is the biggest technical hurdle. The T+1 redemption and competitive liquidity sources are good steps, but I'm not fully convinced they can handle a real crisis. The scenario where multiple funds face simultaneous redemption pressure (a "bank run" on tokenized assets) could trigger a systemic crisis in the lending protocols.
The regulation is another unknown. The tokenized funds are highly likely to be securities, and using them as collateral in DeFi lending involves securities lending and rehypothecation. The SEC's stance is not clear.
But I'm also hopeful. The market is building, and it's building with the right players. The 160 billion in tokenized Treasuries is real adoption. The 250 million in Aave Horizon is a signal that the top protocols are taking this seriously.
The most important takeaway for me is this: the value of tokenization won't be measured by the quantity of tokens issued, but by the value they generate in actual use. The market is transitioning from "issuance" to "utility," and the key metric will be the amount of collateral actually backing loans.
