Bitcoin's October Session Split: Asia +3.9%, Europe −5.5%, and the Attribution Nobody Audited

CryptoPanda

Four numbers. That is the entire payload.

Asia session: +3.9%. US session: +1.1%. Europe session: −5.5%. Buy-and-hold: −0.7%.

Add the sessions. 3.9 + 1.1 − 5.5 = −0.5. The benchmark prints −0.7%. The 0.2-point residual is compounding and boundary bleed — exactly what you expect when you slice a continuous price series into buckets and then sum the pieces. The arithmetic closes.

That is the good news. The chart is not lying about its own math. The bad news is everything the chart is being asked to say.

Context

Around October 20, Galaxy Research published a session-based return decomposition of Bitcoin covering roughly twenty trading days in the back half of the month. Alex Thorn, the firm's head of firmwide research, shared it. The method is standard. Kaiko runs it. CoinMetrics runs it. You cut the 24-hour clock into geographic windows — Asia, Europe, US — compute the price change inside each, and attribute the day's return to whichever session did the work.

I have used this technique. In 2020, dissecting the Bancor v2 exploit, I built an execution trace that bucketed price impact by block and by actor. The entire point was to separate "when the price moved" from "who moved it." Different questions. The chart answers the first. Most readers will hear the second.

In a tape where survival matters more than gains, a chart that says "nothing happened" is the most dangerous kind of chart, because it is true and misleading at once.

That is the failure mode. Not the data. The inference.

Core

Let me run the audit.

Finding 1: Arithmetic passes. Sum of sessions −0.5%, buy-and-hold −0.7%. The direction of the discrepancy matches compounding expectations. Low-level computational error is excluded. Whatever else is wrong here, the spreadsheet is not.

Finding 2: The session boundaries are undisclosed. This is the black box. Asia, Europe, and the US do not occupy clean thirds of the UTC day. London and New York overlap for hours. Asia and London overlap. The rule for assigning an overlapping hour — earlier session, later session, or proportional split — materially changes the result. One reassigned hour can swing a session's contribution by a full percentage point on a twenty-day sample. A return decomposition without published boundaries is a conclusion without a premise.

If the chart uses the common Galaxy-style fixed split — Asia 00:00–08:00, Europe 08:00–16:00, US 16:00–24:00 UTC — then "US" actually contains the American close plus Asia's pre-open. The label is doing work the window does not support.

Finding 3: Observation is being sold as causation. "Driven by Asian sessions" is the phrasing that travels. The data establishes only that price rose during the hours labeled Asia. It does not establish that Asian capital did the buying. Separable claims. The second requires flow evidence the chart does not carry. I have watched this substitution wreck post-mortems. In 2022, cross-referencing an exchange's on-chain transactions against its internal ledgers, the interesting part was never the balances — it was the timing. Money arriving in a window is not the same as money causing the move in that window. Code does not lie, but it does hide.

Finding 4: The Asia session is thin, and thin books amplify. Tokyo mid-session, Singapore open — global liquidity in those hours is a fraction of the London-New York overlap. The same notional produces a larger displacement. The decomposition therefore systematically overweights Asia, because return-per-dollar is higher when the book is empty. The chart measures price movement, not capital. Optimization is just risk wearing a disguise, and a time-sliced return chart is an optimization of a very noisy signal.

Finding 5: Twenty observations per bucket. Twenty trading days, three sessions, roughly twenty points each. That is not a sample. That is an anecdote with error bars it has not earned. No confidence interval is printed anywhere.

Finding 6: Missing variables. No year. No cycle context — bull, bear, chop, unknown. No volume, so the "who was actually trading" question is untouched. An October chart in a bear market and one in a mania are different objects, and the chart declines to say which one you hold.

Contrarian

Here is what the skeptics are missing, and what the bulls got right.

The source is tier-one. Galaxy Research is an institutional shop; Thorn has tracked BTC, miners, and institutional flow for years. This is not an anonymous Telegram chart. Origin credibility is high, and that earns the numbers a hearing rather than a dismissal.

More importantly, the signal is genuinely counter-consensus. The dominant narrative is that US spot ETF flows set Bitcoin's marginal price. If that were cleanly true, the US session should carry the return. Instead the US contributed a modest +1.1%, Europe dragged −5.5%, and Asia was the only net-positive window. That is real tension with the consensus, and it is worth recording precisely because it contradicts the comfortable story.

The practical read is not for directional traders. A −0.7% net produced by a +3.9% and a −5.5% canceling out is a zero-sum session-hedge tape — hostile to anyone taking a view, friendly to market makers and session-arbitrage desks. That is the actionable sentence in the whole report, and it is about structure, not direction.

What the bulls have not earned is the word "trend." Audits verify intent, not outcome. This chart documents an intent to observe. It does not verify regional capital migration. Twenty days cannot separate a structural shift from a macro event that happened to land in a European afternoon.

Takeaway

Treat it as a snapshot, not a map. The data is sound. The conclusion is unearned.

Three things would change that. Rolling session returns sustained for three or more consecutive weeks, not one twenty-day window. Regional premium confirmation — Coinbase Premium widening or Kimchi Premium stretching would tell you whether Asian buying is real capital or thin-book drift. And per-session funding rates on regional venues, which would show where the leverage actually sits.

Until those print, the honest position is that Bitcoin spent the back half of October flat on the surface and violently split underneath: Asia absorbing, Europe distributing, the US quietly netting out. The chain remembers what the ledger forgets. The question is whether the next twenty days remember the same thing.
